US poverty rate unchanged, uninsured drop
August 26th, 2008 | by admin |WASHINGTON, Aug 26 (Reuters) - The U.S. poverty rate didnot change in 2007, but the median household income roseslightly and the number of people lacking health insurance alsodropped slightly, the U.S. Census Bureau said on Tuesday.
“Real median household income in the United States climbed1.3 percent between 2006 and 2007, reaching $50,233,” thebureau said in a statement.
The nation’s official poverty rate in 2007 was 12.5 percent,with 37.3 million people in poverty.
“The number of people without health insurance coveragedeclined from 47 million (15.8 percent) in 2006 to 45.7 million(15.3 percent) in 2007,” the Census Bureau said. (Reporting by Maggie Fox, Editing by Sandra Maler)
