UPDATE 1-Zumiez posts surprise rise in August same-store sales

Sept 3 (Reuters) - Snowboarding gear retailer Zumiez Inc(ZUMZ.O: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) posted a surprise 0.2 percent rise in August sales atstores open at least a year, sending its shares up 6 percent inafter-market trading.

Six analysts, were on average, expecting same-store salesto fall 3.8 percent, according to Thomson Reuters Estimates.

“Footwear, accessories, and boys apparel posted positivecomps for the month, partially offset by negative comps injuniors and mens apparel, and skate hard goods,” Zumiez CFOTrevor Lang said in a pre-recorded call.

The retailer of action-sports-related apparel, footwear,equipment and accessories said total net sales for thefour-week period ended August 30 rose 13.1 percent to $53.2million.

Zumiez, which currently operates 330 stores, cater to youngmen and women between ages 12 and 24 years.

Shares of the mall-based retailer were up 98 cents at$17.41 in trading after the bell. They had closed at $16.43Wednesday on Nasdaq. (Reporting by Dhanya Skariachan in Bangalore; Editing byAnthony Kurian)
